6. Use the "Off" Switch - turn off lights when you leave a room - An engineer friend of mine said he
did a study on when to turn lights off. He uses the 20 minute rule. If you are going back into a room within
20 minutes, then leave the lights on. If you will be more than 20 minutes, turn the lights off
7. Plant a Tree - During photosynthesis, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen.
A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime
8. Heat and cool smartly - Clean air filters regularly and have your heating and cooling equipment tuned
annually by a licensed contractor.
9. Seal and insulate your home
10. Be green in your yard – use a push mower - a mulching mower will reduce grass clippings.
11. Compost your food and yard waste
12. Use water efficiently - only water the yard when needed and do it during the coolest part of the day,
early morning is best. Turn the water off while shaving or brushing teeth. Did you know a leaky toilet can
waste 200 gallons of water per day? Repair all toilet and faucet leaks right away.
